Decaf Coffee Discoveries

Are you a coffee addict like me?

The smell, the sound, the warmth, the taste... the whole routine of waking up early in the morning and brewing a fresh latte, sipping in while the sun comes up, snuggled in a blanket with a book.

Now that's heaven!

What's not heaven is the major TMJ issues it gives me.

TMJ defined by Google:

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your jaw. TMJ disorders — a type of temporomandibular disorder or TMD — can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.

In short, caffeine makes me clench and grind my teeth at night to the point of a sore face, neck, headaches & sinus problems.

Super weird!

...but that's not what this blog is about. It's about an amazing decaf discovery I made recently that everybody who drinks decaf should know about (or maybe they do and I'm way out of the loop!).

But "decaf?!" you ask, "what's the point?!"

The smell, the sound, the warmth, the taste... the whole routine, remember!

But what kept me going back to regular coffee, regardless of TMJ ruining me, was the process of decaffeinating coffee. There are many ways, but the most prevalent is to soak coffee beans in a solvent – usually methylene chloride or ethyl acetate. Methylene chloride can be used as a paint stripper and a degreaser as well an agent to remove caffeine.

NO THANKS!

Until I discovered the Swiss Water Process that uses nothing but water to decaffeinate their beans!

(this isn't a promo post, I swear. I'm just really excited lol)

An excerpt straight from their site:

Swiss Water® Process isn’t Swiss (although it was invented there), it’s Canadian! We decaffeinate coffee using pure water to gently remove caffeine from green coffee beans, without any lingering chemical residue like other processes. The result is delicious decaf coffee roasted and served by some of your favorite brands and cafes.

Pop over to their website to find a cafe near you or look for the Swiss Water logo on packaging. I just ordered this one because it's also organic:

So whether you have TMJ or are a decaf drinker, hopefully this is helpful for you!

Happy Caffeine-Free Friday!
